Following the recent announcement of the rustication of 5 students by the University of Benin, the Zone B of the secretariat National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have declared a state of emergency at the University of Benin over what it referred to as unholy, draconian and eccentric treatment on innocent Nigerian students.
In a circular released by the secretariat after an emergency meeting held on Monday Morning at the June 12 building of the University of Benin, NANS noted that they had exhausted all peaceful approaches to the issue yet the University has refused to change its decision and recall the students.
The statement went on to announce a state of emergency in the University and a total short down of academic activities in the University from Tuesday 6th to Thursday 8th of February, 2018.
Furthermore the statement directed all students to embark on a SIT AT HOME, NO LECTURE REVOLUTION pending the reversal of the decision by the University management.
www.naijmobile.com reported on Sunday that the University of Benin had announce the rustication of the president of the University’s Students’ Union Government and 4 other executive members over their involvement in planning a protest against increment of several fees by the University.
While most students are still in shock over the rustication of their number one student, alumni of the University including past leaders of the Students’ Union Government have called on the University to retrace its steps as soon as possible since the union is expected to be the voice of the students.
The University of Benin had announced the increment of school fees, hostel fees, transfer fees and other fees at the beginning of the new session, prompting students to lament.
Currently it seems like a situation of “complain and get rusticated”. We await the University’s decision and the turn out of the students to tomorrow’s strike.
