SUPER EAGLES PROVISIONAL WORLD CUP SQUAD – Super Eagles’ Head Coach Gernot Rohr has released a 30-man provisional list to represent Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia next month.
The list which is expected to be trimmed to 23, was confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation via their official twitter handle; @thenff with new names making their way to the Super Eagles family.
Former Super Eagles captain and goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama is not included in the list, putting an end to speculations about his return to the Super Eagles.
With the absence of Carl Ikeme due to illness, Coach Gernot Rohr is left with Ikechukwu Ezenwa of Ifeanyi Ubah FC, Daniel Akpeyi of Chippa United, Francis Uzoho of Deportivo de La Coruna and Dele Ajiboye of Plateau United with one of the four goalkeepers expected to be dropped.
Ten defenders have been invited with the “oyinbo pair” Leon Balogun and William Ekong leading the defence. There is also space for Kenneth Omeruo, Elderson Echiejiele, Tyronne Ebuehi, Ola Aina amongst others. Two or more defenders could be dropped.
Captain Mikel Obi leads the army of midfielders with the likes of Wilfred Ndidi who is still injured, Joel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi and Oghenekaro Etebo amongst others.
Kano Pillars in-form striker, Junior Lokosa gets a first time call as well as Crotone of Italy’s Simeon Nwankwo who has scored 6 goals in 7 games including an overhead stunner against Juventus. Other forwards include Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa, Victor Moses, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon. Probably two forwards will be dropped.
The Super Eagles will play two friendly matches against DR Congo (May 28) and England (June 2) after which Coach Gernot Rohr will release the final 23- man list and then play one more friendly match against Czech Republic on June 6, before beginning their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 16.
