WAFU CUP – Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Team, the Super Falcons have clinched the bronze trophy of the maiden edition of the West African Football Union Women’s Cup after defeating Mali, 2:1 in the third place match on Saturday.
The Falcons however fell behind in the ninth minute as Mali’s Diarra Fatoumata’s shot from outside the box put the Malians in front leaving many to wonder if the Super Falcons will leave Abidjan with a trophy after a 100% group stage performance.
Hope was restored in the 15th minute when Nigeria equalised, as winner of the young player (women) at the NFF Awards Rasheedat Ajibade’s pull out came off the crossbar for Chinaza Uchendu to convert.
Uchendu was not done as she scored her second of the game in the 39th minute, to give the Super Falcons the lead going into half time.
The Falcons resumed the second half energised, creating more chances but the Malians held on as Nigeria won the third place play-off 2 -1, and Chinaza Uchendu named woman of the match after her brace in the encounter.
The Super Falcons had earlier won all their group games at the tournament, defeating Mali by a lone goal in their first match, and then beating Senegal in their second group match to qualify for the next round. Even after qualifying they still beat Togo to maintain a 100% start in the tiournament.
However all hope of qualifying for the final was lost as they played a 1:1 draw in the semi-finals with arch rivals, Ghana and lost 5:4 on penalties.
Newly Unveiled Super Falcons Coach Thomas Dennerby, was in charge for the encounter, as the Falcons went for victory against Mali after their disappointing loss to Ghana in the semi-finals.
Ghana will battle hosts, Ivory Coast at 5:30pm on today at the finals in Abidjan.
