Manchester City kick off the new season by winning the Community Shield on penalties, defeating Liverpool 5-4 at Wembley Stadium.
It was not a brilliant performance from Pep Guardiola’s men but Rahem Sterling put them in front in the first half before Matip leveled things up with a brilliant header in the second half.
With the result being 1-1 after the final whistle, the winner was decided by penalty. Georginio Wijnaldum was the unlucky man to miss his effort, while Gabriel Jesus held his nerve to slot in the victory for City.
Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign next Friday against newly-promoted Norwich City at Anfield, while defending Champions Manchester City begin away at West Ham United on Saturday.
