AFCON 2019: Egyptian FA president resigns, head coach sacked after round of 16 elimination

President of the Egyptian Football Association, Hany Abo Riedahas resigned after the host nation was knocked out by South Africa on Saturday by a goal to nil in the round of 16 at the ongoing Total  Africa Cup of Nations.

 

Mr. Rieda also instructed his board members to follow suit and submit their resignations.

Prior to Abo Rida resignation, Egypt head coach Javier Aguirre was sacked and the whole coaching team was dismissed.

“I’m responsible for all the selections and the end results, but I’m still proud of this group of players,” the Mexican coach said on the post-match press conference before being fired by the EFA.

Egypt suffered a surprising defeat at the Cario stadium after Bafana Bafana Thembinkosi Lorch scored a late goal in the 85th minute to put South Africa in the quarter-final.
